Death of a Journeyman
Chris Penn
1965 - 2006
1/25/2006
From the Guardian Unlimited:
Actor Chris Penn, younger brother of Sean and best remembered as Nice Guy Eddie Cabot in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, was found dead at his Santa Monica home yesterday. He was 40, according to police, although most reports put his age as 43.
Penn's body was discovered in bed inside his apartment, located in a four-story condominium complex near the beach, by his housekeeper. Police said they were investigating the cause of death but stated that there were no obvious signs of foul play.
I was shocked when I found this out this morning and I have been thinking about it all day. I don’t know why it affected me so much. Maybe it was because I thought he was a pretty good actor. Maybe it was because he had an “everyman” quality to him and although he had somewhat of a celebrity status and probably made decent money, you could picture him sitting at the end of the bar, drinking a Rolling Rock while arguing the fates of whatever local sports team is playing that night. Or maybe it was because he was thoroughly out of shape, living an unhealthy lifestyle and only 40, a state of existence that might be hitting too close to home, so to speak.
After all, for whom the bell tolls, anyway?
But enough of my maudlin musings, the purpose of this post is to point out something that occurred to me when I thinking about Penn’s career. One of his last performances (I guess) was a prominent guest spot on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. He played a murderous chef on an episode entitled “Death Roe” which originally aired on
Rocket Man
1949 - 2005
Not that long ago, Charlie Rocket, most known as the guy who was fired from Saturday Night Live in the early 1980s for saying the word “fuck” on live network television, also recently had a prominent guest spot on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. He played a suicidal murderer on an episode called “Pas De Deux” which aired
A little over a year later, he was also found dead at his home, an apparent suicide at the age of 56.
I am not superstitious but that coincidence is rather creepy. Can Criminal Intent be considered some kind of end of the line for actors who at one time had some sort of success/fame? Is this show become the new Millennium’s “Love Boat,” a show that had guest actors who Sonny Bono (a frequent guest star himself who also died too young) aptly described as, “either on their way up or on their way down”? Even the show’s own star Vincent D’Onofrio, another successful character actor with a twenty year career under his belt who is now, more and more, being referred to as the “Law and Order Guy,” has wanted off for several years now.
Maybe he knows something that we don’t.

I know, life can be so "macabre," "creepy," etc., at times. And sometimes things happen that seem so coincidental...such as these actors actually dying in a considerable short span of time after appearing on Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
It is sort of like the West Wing series, (recently canceled by NBC after a 7 year run). John Spencer, the actor who played Leo McGarry, the Chief of Staff to the President of the U.S., (played by Martin Sheen; his character being called Jeb Bartlet). Spencer played that he had a massive heart attack, (he survived this for the show), while I think they were away at Camp David. And in real life, a few months after the airing of this heart attack episode, John Spencer actually had a massive heart attack...but..unfortunately...he did not survive this heart attack in real life. Just a coincidence, I'm sure...but for those who "believe" that something "fishy" is going on...meaning that this is really "weird," there are a lot of things that can be seen on a TV show, and then coincidentally the same thing happens in real life. Joh Spencer, in playing Leo McGarry, actually had a few things he experienced in real life, that was incorporated into the show. For example, Spencer was a recovering alcoholic, and on one episode of the show, Leo McGarry's "secret" was discovered by the news media, and they were about to "expose" this to the public. So the episode dealt with the way McGarry was going to handle his "secret" getting out to the public, and he had his own press conference to announce that the revelation that he was a recovering alcoholic, (and also a recovering drug addict), was true.
Ok, just trying to make some sort of sense in my post. The bottom line being that so many "coincidences" happen...from the TV, (or movie), screen, to real life....or is it more than a coincidence? Hmmmmm.....creepy indeed......
For the record, I really don't really believe in any of these "curses" and such. But the West Wing guy having a heart attack after acting a part where he had a heart attack is different then what is going on over at the Wolf Lair.
The guy from West Wing was at that age when heart attacks are not entirely shocking and since his character was the same age and had been on that show for a long time if he was going to have heart attack it would be during the run of the show. The fact that the writers introduced that particular storyline and then he actually has one is coincidental but not too outlandish.
These two guys were both (reletively) young and neither had anything to do with the show except for their one and only guest spot. The fact that they both died completely "out of the blue" in the time frain of their appearnces is more unique.
But it is still a coincidence.

I've only come across your blog tonight (9th april 2007 2.34am.)
It's just a coincidence that Chris Penn & Charles Rocket died not long after being on Law & Order. ( although some might disagree.). There's also the Saturday Night Live curse (Charlie Rocket was on SNL in the 80's.).
I dont think I've heard of Chris Penn. But I've heard of Charlie Rocket albeit over a year after he had taken his own life. At 1st his suicide made no sense but later it did.
I saw him in a clip of the last 9 mins of Law & Order. There was definately something about this last scene. It was too dark. I believe he was drawing on something inside himself when he played this particular scene.
I discovered from some screen caps that his hand injury in the last scene wasnt part of the storyline either. He didnt have this injury in an earlier scene which is meant to be just a few moments earlier in the storyline. His hair is also different.
Having only in the last few days seen him in an earlier scene which would've only been filmed a few days before, he looked so different. He looked so well but later he actually looks ill ( & it's not the makeup). The storyline is supposed to take place over a few days only.
I have yet to see the full episode ( not yet available in the UK)
The transformation is mind boggling & it appears no-one noticed.
I found evidence of Charlie Rocket's depression which I believe happened around the same time Law & Order was filmed.
He left msgs on a blog - one of them was
" Does anybody know who I am anymore?".
This msg was left on 29th Dec 03.
For a person to say these words indicate that they are already in a state of depression.
There's a lot more. If you wish to read why I believe he took his life here is the link:

I was in a state of shock when i read of his death especially when I had only just seen him looking so young & very much alive in an episode of Quantum Leap he filmed around 1990.
In a nutshell the last 2 years of Charlie Rocket's life was very difficult for him....He never got treatment for his depression...
